Loving the Farm Life

6/24/2014

This week Becca and I have finally started getting into the groove of farm life. We've become set with our routine and aren't quite as tired at the end of the day, which helps us to appreciate the smaller joys of working on a farm.

My personal favorite part of the day is looking out at the field in the morning while we harvest. All of the plants are covered in dew and the sun is slowly warming the air around us as we work side by side harvesting for our next market.

It's impossible not to mention Bodie and his constant cuteness. He may lay on the lettuce and dig holes in a few random spots, but a day in the field without Bodie by our side is a very boring day indeed.

This week we had a tractor driving lesson from Guy. Neither Becca or I have ever driven a tractor let alone a stick shift car, but Guy was patient with us and helped us to get the hang of it!

We went and bought a bit of straw this week, and Becca somehow managed to find the time to break and give her best Captain Morgan pose!

This blog couldn't be considered complete with out mentioning tomatoes. This week, we suckered all of our tomatoes. Becca and I have never suckered before and were surprised to see just how dirty our hands got!

Hey everybody! Welcome to the 2014 summer season. We are the interns Lauren (below left) and Becca (below right). For the next few months we will be updating this blog with activities on the farm, as well as our learning experiences! Coming into this internship, we have had no prior experience with farming but we both have hopes of having a farm of our own one day! Lauren and I have been on the farm now for a month and have learned so much already. Check out the pictures below to see some of our adventures on the farm with Guy and Sandy so far this summer! Hope you enjoy!

The heifers had their calves and in this picture they are about two weeks old! Lauren named the red calf Ginny and Becca named the black one Eli. Since then a third one has been born and named Sue by Nellie. We are still expecting one more so stay tuned!

Here is the inside of our cabin in the woods. It is very cozy and has a perfect sized kitchen!
Nellie picking flowers in the sparkling morning dew.
If you have not already, meet Bodie (pronounced Boh-dee)! He is the farm mascot and is always offering to keep us company while we are in the field and a good laugh when we are on break at the house!
Here is the front view of our cabin complete with a porch swing.
Some yummy garlic scapes fresh picked. These are the flowering part of the garlic that is removed to send more energy to the bulb but it tastes just like a clove!
The meat chicks came in today! How adorable. There will not be chicken available for sale this season but look out for it next year!
Thanks for stopping by to check out the blog. Please check back weekly for updates! If you have any questions about the farm don't hesitate to send them via the contact form. Lauren and Becca will be alternating Wyoming (Tuesday) and Lebanon (Thursday) farmer's markets so stop by and say hello! We would love to meet you :)
